Static IP for Algo Trading in India: Why You Need One

If you've set up broker API access for automated trading, you may have been asked for a "static IP." It sounds technical, but the idea is simple — and getting one is easier than most people expect. Here's what it is and why it matters.

What is a static IP?

Every device on the internet has an IP address. Most home and mobile connections use a dynamic IP — it changes periodically. A static IP stays the same every time you connect. That consistency is what brokers and exchanges want for automated trading: it lets them tie your API activity to a known, identifiable source.

Why brokers and SEBI care

As part of the move to make retail algo trading transparent and accountable, exchanges and brokers want automated order flow to be traceable. A static IP:

  • Identifies the source of API requests, supporting the compliance and audit trail.
  • Improves security — brokers can whitelist your specific IP so only your machine can use your keys.
  • Adds stability — no dropped API sessions because your IP changed mid-day.

Note: Exact requirements vary by broker and can change with SEBI/exchange circulars. Check your broker's current algo/API policy before you set up.

How to get a static IP in India

1. Cloud server / VPS (most popular)

Run your trading software on a cloud server (VPS) that comes with a fixed IP. It's always on, fast, close to the exchange, and accessible from any device over remote desktop. This is the most common choice for serious algo traders and what powers most "always-on" setups.

2. Static IP from your ISP

Some internet providers offer a static IP as an add-on. Workable if you keep your machine running, but less reliable than a cloud server for 24/7 automation.

3. Static-IP proxy service

A proxy routes your API traffic through a fixed IP. Useful when you want to trade from your own PC but still present a consistent IP to the broker.

Which should you choose?

For most traders, a cloud server / VPS is the cleanest answer: reliable, secure, always-on, and it keeps your automation running even if your home internet or laptop goes down. If you only trade occasionally, an ISP static IP or proxy may be enough.
